Also, while it has Bluetooth support, you can only connect to one device at a time, so you can't use it to type a document on your Mac and quickly respond to an email on your tablet. Sadly, it doesn't have any backlighting, which is disappointing for a high-end Apple product, so it's not ideal to use in a dark environment.

Typing feels great as the low-profile switches are comfortable and are fairly light to press, but it takes some force to get over the tactile bump. It's Apple's latest release of their well-known Magic Keyboard, and it's available in both a full-size variant, which is the one we tested, and a 75% compact size if you prefer something smaller.Īs this is an Apple keyboard, it's fully compatible with macOS. It has the new Touch ID button at the top right, which works with M1 Mac computers so that it's easier for you to unlock your PC, but the Touch ID button doesn't work with any other Mac.

Until new MBP design is released in 2020 or so, butterfly switches stay.If you're looking for a tried and true keyboard to use with a Mac office setup, the best wireless keyboard for Mac that we've tested is the Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad. But why "Pro" machine need to be that skinny? MBP is supposed to be a powerhouse just like its name, not a fashion item!īutterfly switches are not going anywhere because Apple think they are genius despite all the complains. And of course Apple stands to benefit even more because repairing this type of keyboard is not cheap at all.Īpparently Apple is obsessed with making every device super thin.

You are not the only one complain about this keyboard design, a lot of people hate it. Keyboards are practically the same between 20, both use butterfly switches.

Comparing to modern Windows laptop, MBP's battery life has gone from good several years ago to just meh. Non-TB version has slightly better battery life than TB, due to larger battery.

Here's hoping the new battery + keyboard lasts a good many more years.Ģ017 MBP is just 2016 design with upgraded CPU.

For what I do (computery stuff), I'm glad I didn't buy the 12" MB in late 2016.Īs for the perennial argument of what a "Pro" laptop should be - my personal opinion is that they should have made these thin ones the new Air line (or simply "MacBook" like that lonely 12" model), and have gone with thicker ones for the real Pro users (not me). However, the 12" MBs always gave me a 10% speed hit I could never really improve on it despite much determination. For the record, I go equally fast on Butterfly 2 compared to Cherry MX Brown and Topre switches (averaging between 100-110 wpm at 10fastfingers) - if you can type, you can learn to be fast on the current MBPs. Otherwise, it just won't be the right laptop for you. My only recommendation is to be good at touch typing, and unlearn bad banging habits. To the OP (who has more than likely tried the 2017 keyboards for themselves by now) or anyone else who dislikes the keyboard: I did too at first (especially for the 12" MB which does have more shallow travel, especially the older ones), but before I decided to buy it, I kept practising on them at 10fastfingers in the Apple store. It looks pretty neat and matches the shortcut symbols in macOS menus now.

Meanwhile, the 2017 keys have the ^ (control) and option symbol added (previously it was "alt" in the upper right above the "option" label on the key). Further testing awaits as far as the battery goes.

As for the battery - System Information reports full capacity at 4898mAh (I forgot to check whether the charged capacity matched this), which is up from the 3807mAh on the previous battery which it didn't reach when last at 100%). The half-keys also seem to respond better whereas before, corner presses would often not trigger them. The keyboard definitely feels "different" or "new" but is almost inperceptible that new users wouldn't be able to tell the difference - but I can't really say whether wear on the 2016 switches would contribute to any change in feel ( maybe it feels quieter/more stable/more assured?). It was cutting out at around 10% without warning or hibernation and total run time was down to less than 5.5 hours, which was about 30 minutes to an hour less than usual (with only 300 cycles on the board). I have the 2016 13" nTB and got it back today after a top case replacement thanks to the battery (5-day turnaround, under the 24-month Australian warranty, no AppleCare). Hijacking the top posts, I can confirm this - as far as I can tell, I now have a 2017-model top case.
